Artificial anuran chorusing

چکیده

An artificial anuran chorus is built by simulating a population of signalers and their spatial distributions. Models and methods of the simulation are presented emphasizing the networked nature of a chorus, the consequences this has on its temporal structures, and how composers can use these models to rhythmically coordinate agent-based musical systems. Additionally, the paper discusses of the use of artificial life models in music as a literal imitation of nature.

Energetic dynamics and anuran breeding phenology: insights from a dynamic game

We designed a dynamic optimization model to examine anuran-breeding phenologies. We evaluated the fitness consequences for males adopting one of four alternative strategies: calling, satelliting, foraging, or hiding. Various factors potentially influence male behavior, including energy reserves, predation risk, cost of calling, probability of finding food, distribution of male energy states in ...

Multiple signals and male spacing affect female preference at cocktail parties in treefrogs.

Effective acoustic communication in the face of intense conspecific background noise constitutes a constant sensory challenge in chorusing and colonial species. An evolutionary approach suggests that behavioural and environmental constraints in these species should have shaped signal design and signalling behaviour to enable communication in noisy conditions. This could be attained both through...

A test of the Energetics-Hormone Vocalization model in the green treefrog.

Male courtship displays may be regulated by, and affect the production of, circulating hormones. The Energetics-Hormone Vocalization (EHV) model, for example, posits that interactions among chorusing male anuran amphibians stimulate androgen production that then mediates an increase in vocal effort. Increased vocal effort is expected to deplete energy reserves and increase glucocorticoid levels...

Chorusing, synchrony, and the evolutionary functions of rhythm

A central goal of biomusicology is to understand the biological basis of human musicality. One approach to this problem has been to compare core components of human musicality (relative pitch perception, entrainment, etc.) with similar capacities in other animal species. Here we extend and clarify this comparative approach with respect to rhythm. First, whereas most comparisons between human mu...

The Sounds of Silence as an Alarm Cue in Túngara Frogs, Physalaemus pustulosus

In many species males vocally advertise for mates in choruses and these choruses serve as acoustic beacons to conspecific females as well as to eavesdropping predators and parasites. Chorusing will often cease in response to disturbances, such as the presence of predators. In some cases the cessation is so rapid and over such a large area that it seems improbable that males are all responding d...
